Google Ads in 2026: What AI Has Changed in Advertising and What Businesses Should Control Themselves
In 2026, Google Ads changed more than it had over the previous several years. AI Max for Search campaigns came out of beta, ads appeared in AI Mode, budgets began to be spent according to demand, and Dynamic Search Ads are preparing to move to AI Max.
For advertisers, this means a change in the very logic of the work. The question is no longer how to manually configure every campaign parameter, but which decisions to hand over to the algorithm and which ones the business must control itself: goals, data, lead quality and finances.
In this article, we break down the key updates of 2026, explain who they affect and what is worth doing before the end of the year.

Google Ads features roll out gradually, so the availability of individual tools may depend on country, language and campaign type. What AI Max is and how it
What AI Max is and how it changes search advertising
The classic model of search advertising was linear: keyword, search query, ad, landing page, bid. The marketer collected keywords, wrote ads and manually filtered out irrelevant queries.
AI Max changes this model. It is a set of features for Search campaigns that combines three mechanisms:
- Search term matching. The system looks for relevant queries beyond the keyword list, using website content, ad text and other signals. This is especially noticeable for conversational and long-tail queries that are hard to anticipate in advance.
- Text customization. Gemini generates or adapts headlines and descriptions based on existing ads and the landing page.
- Final URL expansion. The system can send the user not to the specified page, but to another page on the site that it considers more relevant to the query.
Each mechanism can be switched on separately and restricted: you can specify brands to include or exclude, exclude URLs the system should not use, and configure locations at the ad group level.
New control tools: AI Brief and text disclaimers
In spring 2026, Google announced two important tools for managing AI Max:
- AI Brief. A Gemini-powered tool in which the advertiser sets rules for messaging, query matching and audience in natural language. A preview of sample ads and queries is available before launch. The rollout starts in English.
- Text disclaimers. They make it possible to keep mandatory legal text in responsive search ads even when AI Max features are enabled. This matters for financial, healthcare and other regulated industries.
Ads in AI Mode
Google has started showing ads in AI Mode, a search mode with AI-generated answers. According to Google Marketing Live 2026, these ads run through Performance Max and AI Max.
The practical consequence: Search campaigns that use only exact and phrase match, without AI Max, do not get access to these placements. AI Mode availability depends on country and language, so before planning it is worth checking whether it works in your market.
Who needs to act before the end of the year
Advertisers with Dynamic Search Ads
The automatic migration of DSA campaigns to AI Max was originally scheduled for September 2026. After advertiser feedback, Google moved it to February 2027 so as not to disrupt fourth-quarter planning.
This leaves several months to make the transition in a controlled way rather than automatically:
- analyze what results your DSA campaigns deliver today and which website pages they use;
- run a side-by-side test of AI Max and DSA on part of the budget;
- set up URL and brand exclusions before the transition;
- use the voluntary migration tools without waiting for automatic migration.
Automatic migration may carry over settings inaccurately, and performance problems will only become visible after the campaign starts spending budget under the new rules.
Campaigns with automatically created resources and broad match
Campaigns with automatically created assets and broad match These settings are being moved to AI Max starting in September 2026. It is worth checking whether text customization and URL expansion have been enabled, and reviewing the search terms reports for the past few weeks.
Regulated industries
If your ads must contain mandatory disclaimers, set up text disclaimers before enabling AI Max so that generated texts do not lose legally required wording.
How AI changes advertising budget spending
Marketing teams often overlook this aspect, even though it has the greatest impact on financial planning.
The budget is spent unevenly
Since 2026, all Search campaigns use demand-led budget pacing: the system spends more on high-demand days and less on slow days. Google’s rules on average daily budgets have not changed: a campaign can spend up to twice the average daily budget in a single day, but over a month the total will not exceed 30.4 times the average daily budget.
For a business, this means the account balance may run out faster than a simple calculation of “daily budget times number of days” would suggest, especially during seasonal peaks.
Broader reach means more potential spend
AI Max finds queries that were not in the keyword list. If goals and conversions are configured incorrectly, the campaign will effectively optimize for the wrong metric and spend budget on traffic that does not bring sales.
Pausing delivery harms algorithm learning
Automated campaigns perform well when they receive a steady flow of data. If a campaign stops because the balance has run out or a payment has been declined, the algorithm loses part of its data, and after it resumes, results may worsen. That is why uninterrupted account funding becomes a marketing issue, not an accounting one.
The real cost of advertising is higher than the figures in the account
Bids and budgets in campaigns do not include VAT. For advertisers from Ukraine, 20% VAT is charged separately, and for individuals, sole proprietors and companies that are not VAT payers, this is a direct additional cost. We explained in detail how to check these charges in the account in a separate article on VAT in Google Ads.
What cannot be delegated to AI
The more operational decisions the algorithm takes on, the more important the human role becomes at the strategic level. A marketer no longer has to manage every bid manually, but four questions remain with the business:
- What are we selling? The algorithm helps find an audience, but it does not define the business model or priority products.
- Which customer do we want to attract? Broader reach does not mean a better audience. What needs to be assessed is lead quality and actual sales.
- Which conversion do we consider valuable? For one business it is a lead form submission, for another a paid purchase, a repeat order or a customer with high lifetime value.
- How much are we willing to pay for the result? The target acquisition cost should be based on margins, the sales cycle and the economics of the business, not on market averages.
Checklist for the fourth quarter of 2026
The review covers both the marketing and the financial side, so it is worth carrying it out together with the finance department.
| Area | What to check | Owner |
| Conversions | Whether the campaign optimizes for actions that create real business value | Marketing |
| Data | Whether data on lead quality and actual sales is passed to | Marketing, CRM |
| AI Max | Which features are enabled, which brands and URLs are excluded, whether AI Brief is set up | Marketing |
| DSA | Whether there is a plan for a controlled transition before | Marketing |
| Website | Whether the pages AI Max may send traffic to match user intent | Marketing, product |
| Budget | Whether uneven spending on high-demand days and seasonal peaks is accounted for | Marketing, finance |
| Balance | Whether there is a funds buffer in the account to avoid campaign pauses | Finance |
| Taxes | Whether VAT is factored into the real customer acquisition cost | Finance |
| Documents | Whether accounting receives closing documents for all advertising platforms | Finance |
Conclusion
Google Ads is moving from a “set up the ads” model to a “manage a system that optimizes the ads itself” model. This does not make the marketer redundant: their role shifts from manual settings to working with data, goals, creative and algorithm oversight.
At the same time, automation raises the bar for financial stability. Uneven spending, broader reach and the algorithms’ sensitivity to pauses mean that uninterrupted account funding and transparent expense accounting become part of the advertising strategy, not just a task for the accounting team.
